Round Table: A ‘Musical League of Nations’? Music Institutions and the Politics of Internationalism between the Wars

This round table grew out of two gatherings in 2018–19 that endeavoured to bring musicologists into dialogue with recent revisions the history international relations. 1 Our specific focus was interwar period, more often discussed terms nationalism – or perhaps at best transnationalism than within context internationalism, a principle lay behind foundation elite governmental organizations such as League Nations, United World Health Organization, International Labour Organization and others. As historians Glenda Sluga Patricia Clavin have shown, construction objects global governance by these ran alongside broader sweep non-governmental groupings forwarded interests indigenous, working-class, anti-colonialist, anti-slavery feminist causes. 2 What role roles did music play contexts? The case studies follow illustrate far-reaching implications internationalist policies for musical institutions, groups individuals.
